In a new podcast, she openly discusses therapy, manic episodes, and her partner's support.
Selena Gomez was a guest on the podcast "Friends Keep Secrets," hosted by her husband, music producer Benny Blanco. In the episode from March 3rd, she openly talked about her mental health and admitted that for years she felt something was off with her psyche, but doctors initially misdiagnosed her.
She received the correct diagnosis of bipolar disorder only after years, during which she switched multiple therapists and underwent four treatment stays. "I knew something was wrong. People just assumed, and I tried multiple therapists. That's why it's so hard. It's really challenging to talk about these things. For me, going to a therapist and dealing with it all is incredibly complicated,” the singer confessed.
Gomez also explained that finding the right diagnosis (13:18 mark) and treatment took a long time and meetings with various experts. However, she emphasized that despite this, it's important not to give up and to keep seeking help.
Benny Blanco also commented on her health, saying that Selena sometimes experiences manic episodes, which she doesn't always realize immediately. Sometimes, he said, she only becomes aware of what's happening during or even after the fact.
The singer stressed that she is not ashamed of these moments. On the contrary, thanks to therapy and her partner's support, she now better understands her emotions and behavior. She added that she is gradually learning to live more freely with her diagnosis and also pointed out the stigma that still surrounds mental health topics and seeking professional help.
