We often swap our authentic selves for generic filters on social media. How does this affect our psyche?

Social networks and their algorithms have gradually taught us to prefer digital faces over real ones. This phenomenon, which is destroying the confidence of an entire generation, has been dubbed “Snapchat Dysmorphia.” As much as 72% of plastic surgeons say there's an increasing number of patients seeking procedures to look better in selfies.

Why do we feel the need to hide and erase what makes us unique and replace it with generic perfection? In a new video, we explored how filters "manipulate" us using the mathematical "Golden Ratio" and why everyone starts to look suspiciously similar. With psychologist Dominika Neprašová from the platform K Sebe, we broke down what's really happening in our heads when we automatically add filters to our photos and what happens when we then look in the mirror.
