Could Easter See a Chocolate Shortage? 12 Tons of Nestlé Bars Stolen

OTHER

A shipment worth hundreds of thousands of euros disappeared on its way from central Italy to Poland.

In Europe, 12 tons of Nestlé’s KitKat chocolate got stolen. The company confirmed that during transportation in Europe, someone nabbed a truck loaded with 413,793 pieces of chocolate. The shipment, weighing about 12 tons, disappeared last week while traveling between the manufacturing plant and distribution sites, reports Le Monde.

The brand warned that “the theft could lead to a shortage of KitKats on the shelves,” and admitted that “consumers might unfortunately have trouble finding their favorite chocolates as Easter approaches.”

The stolen truck left from central Italy and was headed to Poland, with plans to distribute the bars in countries along the route. The company didn't specify where exactly the goods went missing. “An investigation is underway in close collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners,” added the firm.

KitKat warns that the missing chocolate bars “could end up in unofficial sales channels in European markets”. According to the company, the stolen goods can be tracked by scanning unique batch codes found on each bar. “If a match is found, the scanner will provide clear instructions on how to alert KitKat, which will then supply evidence to the relevant authorities,” stated the company.
