The Beast Who Killed Kids No One Missed
Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos, also known as the Beast, was officially convicted for the murders of 138 children, but some estimates suggest the real number could reach up to six hundred.
Garavito grew up in a poor Colombian family, where violence was a daily occurrence. His father was an alcoholic who physically and mentally abused not only his children but also his wife. School wasn’t any better for him. Unable to fit in with his peers, he was bullied and mocked, creating a growing anger and hatred for the world around him.
He first took out his frustrations on animals and later, following his father's example, on his own family. Garavito began sexually assaulting his younger siblings, which went unnoticed due to his parents' own troubles.
In 1972, he attempted to rape a six-year-old boy. His father then kicked him out, leaving young Luis Alfredo Garavito on the streets. From that point, his life was marked by alcohol and odd jobs, as well as an increasing obsession with young boys.
Initially, he lured them away from busy streets by offering money, food, or small jobs. To win their trust, he often dressed as figures of authority such as a priest or teacher. His victims were usually between six and sixteen years old and came from impoverished families or the streets, whose absence often went unnoticed for hours.
Garavito first abused them sexually but later his brutality intensified. He beat them, burned them with candles, cut them with razors, and eventually began killing them. Mutilated bodies of children started appearing in Colombia, causing panic among locals. Due to remote locations and poor police coordination, Garavito evaded capture for nearly seven years.
After years of continuous killing and evading authorities, police finally caught Garavito on April 22, 1999. In court, he was charged with 172 murders.

The Killer Clown’s Dark Secrets
Luis Alfredo Garavito wasn’t the only serial killer who targeted boys. In the 70s, John Wayne Gacy, known as the Killer Clown, terrified Illinois.
Outwardly, he seemed a respected and successful man. Gacy worked as a construction contractor, was active in the local community, and even involved in politics. In his free time, he performed as a clown at kids' parties and charity events, entertaining children and handing out balloons. That's where his nickname came from. But beneath the cheerful costume and smile lay a dark reality.
Gacy chose his victims mainly among young men and teenage boys. He often approached them with offers of work at his construction company or with money or friendship. Once he gained their trust, he'd invite them to his suburban Chicago home.

Property Full of Corpses
The scenario was the same. He tied up the youths, sexually abused them, and then killed them. Many of the bodies were hidden under the floor of his house in a narrow space beneath the foundations. Once he could no longer fit more bodies, he started dumping some in the nearby Des Plaines River.
For years, he evaded suspicion. Gacy appeared to be a reliable neighbor and successful businessman, diverting attention away from himself. But in 1978, things changed when police started investigating the disappearance of 15-year-old Robert Piest, who was last seen speaking with Gacy.
Investigators eventually obtained permission to search his house. What they found shocked not only locals but the police themselves. Under his house's floorboards were the bodies of dozens of young men and boys. John Wayne Gacy was ultimately convicted of 33 murders. He was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 1994.
His story was documented in the book Killer Clown by Terry Sullivan, the man who led his prosecution, taking the reader back to the most famous case of his career. The book Inside the Mind of John Wayne Gacy offers an intriguing perspective on the killer and his victims. Journalist Brad Hunter attempts to uncover what circumstances and psychological factors led to his brutal murders.

The Milwaukee Cannibal
Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960, in Milwaukee. His childhood didn’t seem dramatic at first glance, but his family environment was unstable. His parents often argued, and their marriage gradually fell apart.
During his adolescence, he began developing strange and unsettling interests. Fascinated by dead animals, he frequently dissected them. In school, he was a loner and gradually began encountering alcohol issues.
After finishing school, his life started to unravel. Around this time, he began targeting young men and boys who became his victims. He met them frequently in bars, gay clubs, or bathhouses. He often offered them money in exchange for their company or for posing for photos.
Once he gained their trust, he invited them to his Milwaukee apartment. There, he drugged his victims so they couldn’t resist, then killed them. In numerous cases, postmortem sexual abuse occurred. Dahmer also kept some body parts as grim souvenirs and even consumed some.
Grim Souvenirs
His reign of terror ended on July 22, 1991, when one of his potential victims managed to escape and call the police. Upon entering Dahmer’s apartment, officers found photos of dissected bodies, skulls, bones, and other human remains.
In 1992, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was sentenced to 15 life terms and incarcerated in Columbia, Wisconsin. He spent only two years behind bars. On November 28, 1994, he was attacked and killed by another inmate while serving his sentence.
The book Inside the Mind of Jeffrey Dahmer aims to delve into the thoughts of one of modern history’s most notorious serial killers. The author examines Dahmer’s life, dark fantasies, and the circumstances of the brutal murders of young men that shocked the entire U.S.

The Double Life of Dennis Nilsen
Young boys were also the preference for a Scot named Dennis Nilsen. Publicly, he was an unassuming lone man. Secretly, however, former soldier and policeman Dennis Nilsen led a dark double life and became one of the UK’s most notorious serial killers.
Between 1978 and 1983, he lured young men into his North London apartment – often homeless or people he met in bars – with the promise of food, alcohol, or a place to stay overnight.
Once he gained their trust, he strangled them and then hid the bodies in his apartment, later dissecting them and trying to dispose of the remains by flushing them down the drain.

Pipes Filled with Bodies
His crimes were uncovered in 1983 when tenants started complaining about clogged pipes, which led workers to discover human remains leading directly to his apartment. Nilsen was subsequently arrested and sentenced to life in prison.
Seven years after his conviction, Nilsen began writing an autobiography. Over 18 years, he created around 6,000 pages of reflections, memories, comments, and confessions. Although Dennis Nilsen tried to publish his memoirs during his lifetime, the British Home Office blocked it, and the book was released only after his death in 2018 with the consent of his closest friend under the title History of a Drowning Boy.
