PHOTO: Fewer Walls, More Life. How This Family Gained Space Without Leaving Their Budapest Home

CULTURE

Check out what you can do when you need more space in your apartment but don’t want to leave your favorite area.

The Slovak architectural studio Create Space, which also operates internationally, introduces a new project – a renovation of an apartment in Budapest for a modern family.

Every family faces the dilemma of finding a compromise between comfort and location. The family in Budapest faced the same issue, with their beloved apartment feeling "tight" due to the need for a separate office and children's rooms.

Instead of leaving a place with friends, schools, and a familiar environment, they found a way with architects to expand the space where they feel at home.

The team of architects came up with an unexpected solution: skip invasive construction work and use furniture instead of partitions – they chose smart layering of carpentry elements that define boundaries between the social and work areas of the apartment.

Multifunctional pieces not only divide the space but also include storage, a library, or acoustic dampening, maximizing every square meter. The Create Space studio didn't use solid partitions, preserving the natural flow of light and the airy feel typical of Budapest apartments in this area.

This project is not just about design. It’s about preserving home where the heart of the family beats.

The project represents an example of sustainable renovation, as by eliminating demolition work, there was minimal construction waste and less noise, saving the family months of relocation complications.

The family decided not to sell the apartment – the kids didn't have to change their preschool or school, and everyone got the interior they needed without leaving their favorite area.

In the post-pandemic era, almost everyone is facing the "home office vs. kids' room" problem. The Create Space studio's project shows that an architect doesn't need to spend money on expensive materials, but should find effective and sustainable solutions that truly improve the homeowners' quality of life. In Budapest, they preserved a home that’s more than just design – it represents a feeling that remained even after the architects left.
