Charlie's Angels Are Coming Back with a New Movie: What Do We Know About the Sequel?

MOVIES & SERIES

After the unsuccessful 2019 attempt, the writer of the hit Crazy Rich Asians takes the helm.

The iconic Charlie's Angels franchise is getting another movie adaptation. The script for the new adventure will be penned by Pete Chiarelli, known for hits like Crazy Rich Asians, The Proposal, and Now You See Me 2. Production will involve Flower Films, owned by Drew Barrymore—one of the main stars and producers of the successful early 2000s film version.

The original series about three private detectives working for the mysterious Charlie Townsend quickly won over audiences worldwide. Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson turned these characters into icons, which kept the show on air for five seasons.

In the 21st century, director McG brought the brand to the big screen. Actresses Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore delivered performances that brought in $264 million for the first movie. The sequel, Full Throttle, solidified the franchise's position in the elite Hollywood “A-list” league.

The Latest Attempt and New Hope

The latest version, directed by Elizabeth Banks, aimed for a more modern and feminist approach with a cast featuring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. Despite efforts to maintain continuity with previous films, the project didn’t perform well in theaters, with a worldwide gross of $73 million being a disappointment for the studio.
