New York Times Picks Central Europe Again: After a Slovak Horror, Now Recommending Czech Film 'Její Tělo'

MOVIES & SERIES

In its regular selection of international titles for streaming, it highlights Central European cinema once more. Natália Germani shines in both recommended films.

The renowned column Five International Movies to Stream Now regularly brings a curated selection of fascinating films from around the globe available on streaming platforms. This February, the Czech film Her Body by director Natálie Císařovská caught attention. The movie tells the life story of diver Andrea Absolonová, whose sports career ended due to an injury, after which she made her mark in the adult film industry.

According to The New York Times, it's a thoughtfully constructed biographical film that follows the transformation of the main character without sensationalism or cheap moralizing. Critics praise its down-to-earth storytelling style, focus on character psychology, and a sensitive look at themes of physicality, performance, and personal autonomy. The lead role is played by Natália Germani, well-known to audiences in Czechia and Slovakia.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time a film connected to the Slovak setting and Natália Germani has made it into the same selection. About a year ago, The New York Times also recommended the Slovak genre horror title Svetlonos, highlighting the growing visibility of regional productions outside the mainstream.

The current selection is rounded out by titles from South Korea, India, Portugal, and Canada, ranging from political satire to dark thriller and intimate pandemic comedy. The curated list once again confirms that streaming platforms are becoming spaces where international film creations reach a wider audience, regardless of language or country of origin.
