The week of love has kicked off and we can't think of a more perfect time to indulge in a romantic movie night. If you feel like you know all the classics like The Notebook or Pretty Woman, we're bringing you up to eight special movie picks. Holidays in Rome (1953)

Romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn reveals the story of a princess who decides to escape from her royal duties. In Rome, she experiences a dream "day of freedom" alongside journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck).


The film brought Audrey Hepburn her first Oscar for her leading role and also won awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Costume Design.

The English Patient (1996)

Set during World War II, this romantic drama follows the fate of a badly burned cartographer (Ralph Fiennes) who is nursed in a convent by a nurse named Hannah (Juliette Binoche). Gradually, the tragic story of his fatal but forbidden love for a married Englishwoman (Kristin Scott Thomas) is revealed. Hana not only cares for him, but also delves deeply into his past and finds a way to heal her own wounds.


The film won a total of 9 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director (Anthony Minghella), Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche), Cinematography (John Seale), Production Design and Set Decoration, Costumes, Original Score (Gabriel Yared), Editing and Sound.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Director Ang Lee's drama tells the story of two cowboys (Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) who become close while working as sheep herders on Brokeback Mountain and have a passionate but secret romance.

 

Despite both choosing to marry women and live a family life, their love endures for nearly 20 years, but continually runs up against societal constraints and their internal conflicts. The film won Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Original Score.

Repentance (2007)

The story of the tragic love between Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) and Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) is ruined by a false accusation made by Cecilia's younger sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan). The latter, in addition to misunderstanding the situation that has arisen in Cecilia and Robbie's relationship, also accuses the young gardener of raping their cousin.

 

Robbie ends up in prison, changing not only his life but also that of Cecilia, who loved him, irrevocably. Later, Briony bitterly regrets her rash decision, but her actions have already marked the fates of three people forever. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The Artist (2011)

If you want to see something completely different, The Artist is the right choice for you! This silent black-and-white film tells the story of George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), an actor of the silent film era whose career begins to decline with the advent of sound film.

 

In turn, a young actress, Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), whom George has his eye on, rises to the top of fame. However, George is married and cannot cope with the advent of sound in the film industry. While Peppy wants to help him, his pride and stubbornness gradually bring him down. The film won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Lead Actor, Music and Costume Design

Love Therapy (2012)

The pair agree to help each other, and their unconventional relationship helps them both cope with their personal challenges. Gradually, an unexpected bond develops between them. Jennifer Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance.

Give Me Your Name (2017)

Gradually, he and Eli form a strong bond and together they have an unforgettable summer full of discovering love, longing and their own identity. The film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Shape of Water (2017)

Fantasy romance about a mute cleaning lady, Elise (Sally Hawkins), who works in a top-secret government lab. There, she discovers a strange creature that is being held captive and subjected to experiments. The two lonely creatures gradually form a strong bond with each other and are able to understand each other's language.

 

Their relationship deepens and Elise faces danger when she decides to protect the creature. The film, which depicts an unusual love story between two different creatures, won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Director, Production Design and Music.
