Europol released, in collaboration with EMCDDA, a deep analysis of the drug market in Europe. It showed that the most used drug in European states is cocaine, which 14 million people between the age of 15 and 64 have tried at least once. The greatest presence of the drug was found in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.

The analysis was divided into several parts, with the first one being about cocaine. For a few consecutive years, it was the most used drug in Europe and according to Europol, accessibility to this drug it the highest in history. The estimates state that at least 5% of Europeans aged 15 to 64 have tried cocaine at least once in their life, which makes 14 million people in total. Approximately 3.5 million have used the drug in the last year.

Cocaine is distributed to Europe from many South African countries, especially through aircrafts and ships. In 2020 alone, 214.6 tons of cocaine were seized in Europe, while 73% of it was related to Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.

The greatest amount of the drug was transported to Europe on through the sea. Sailors hide the white powder in containers and most often transport it from Brazil, Columbia and Ecuador. The ships then head to Antwerp or Rotterdam, where 15 million containers arrive yearly and customs officers have severe difficulty checking such amount of carriers. Smugglers are very well aware of this and rely on the fact that their cargo will remain unnoticed.
