The film world is gearing up for an intriguingly fresh genre crossover.
The legendary Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and global music superstar Bad Bunny are set to appear together in an upcoming baseball dramedy titled The Comebacker. This anticipated project also marks the return of a proven directorial team that has previously enjoyed critical success, according to Hypebeast.
The project officially reunites Tom Hanks with director Marielle Heller, continuing their successful and critically acclaimed collaboration from 2019's A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The script is based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize finalist Dave Eggers and offers a truly original plot.
Tom Hanks will play Lionel, an aging sports journalist whose dwindling passion for his craft is unexpectedly reignited by a minor league pitcher. This pitcher suffers a traumatic injury on the field when he's struck in the head by a hard-hit ball, known in baseball slang as a “comebacker”. After this brutal hit, the athlete begins to display unexpected behavior and speak in poetic phrases, which thanks to Lionel's articles, quickly becomes a national phenomenon.
While specific details about supporting characters are still top-secret, the confirmed participation of the music star sheds light on Tom Hanks' surprising appearance at the singer's concert in Australia earlier this year.
However, since the popular Grammy award winner is currently on an extensive worldwide tour, which will last at least until the end of July, the exact schedule for the start of the film's production remains unclear. Movie fans will have to wait a bit longer for the first clapboard of this unusual but enticing project.
