Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Sinners) has got the green light for a pilot on Hulu for The X-Files reboot. What will the new series be about and who will star in it?
The X Files, the OG series from 1993 featuring the iconic duo Mulder and Scully (played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson), ran for a total of 11 seasons and spawned several feature films. Over that time, it bagged numerous awards, largely for best actor and actress. But more than that, it gifted us an endless fascination with the unknown and a pile of conspiracy theories—some of which still resonate today, as current and former U.S. presidents try to outdo each other in revealing classified UFO info.
Now, The X Files is getting a reboot, courtesy of director Ryan Coogler (potential Oscar winner perhaps?), known best for his Marvel hits Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But even more pivotal to this new X Files series is his latest work, Sinners—a vampire horror that's not exactly horror. This vibe would fit perfectly into a show that blurs reality and fiction, hinting at "what's out there."
Pilot Phase and Casting
The project has moved to the next phase. After planning and scriptwriting, the pilot is greenlit. Streaming service Hulu (Disney+ in the Czech Republic) is behind it, with Coogler directing the pilot. Based on its success, the rest of the first season will either get the go-ahead or be canned.
First to join the cast is actress Danielle Deadwyler, who you might know from the series Station 11 or films like The Gift and Justice for Emmett Till.
Officially, it's a loose continuation where the core "architecture" remains but with new faces. "Two highly esteemed but very different FBI agents form an unexpected friendship when assigned to a long-closed division dealing with unexplained phenomena," reads the synopsis.
Coogler previously announced that the new X Files will be genuinely scary. He wants to push the boundaries of what's possible on TV and test viewers' limits. He also revealed he had conversations with Gillian Anderson, sparking speculation that she might creatively contribute or even star. Original series creator Chris Carter remains involved as an executive producer and has given his blessing.
