The story of Bob touched the hearts of both the public and politicians so deeply that the Brazilian state of São Paulo passed a law allowing pets to be buried alongside their families.
Dogs are considered loyal companions. This is not only evident in the famous film about Hachiko but also in a recent case from Brazil. One dog's story even led to a change in the law—just because for ten years, it visited its owner's grave.
The dog Bob, nicknamed "Coveiro" (which means gravedigger), lived in a cemetery in São Paulo, where his owner was buried. Over time, according to BBC, he became a symbol of devotion and brought comfort to people who came there to mourn their loved ones.
When Bob passed away in 2021, he was buried in the same place as his owner. But his story didn’t end there.
This Tuesday, he inspired the adoption of the so-called "Bob’s Law", which in the state of São Paulo allows pets to be buried in family graves if hygienic conditions are met. The law officially recognizes what many have long felt—that pets are full-fledged members of the family.
