After the new generation Kodiaq, Skoda is also introducing a new Superb with serial number four. It wants to continue to impress with its attractive exterior, although it has rather sleeker shapes between generations. The Czech carmaker's flagship, which will be produced for the first time at Volkswagen's Bratislava plant, retains its sharper lines, especially at the front, but the rear is also more rounded thanks to the new Modern Solid design language.

Unlike its sibling the Passat (with which it now shares the same body frame), the Superb will be launched in both liftback and estate body styles. In both cases, it is more than four centimetres longer, while the newcomer is about 1.5 centimetres narrower in width. Full-LED lights are standard, but at an extra cost the Superb boasts Bi-LED Matrix technology, which consists of 36 segments. There are also spectacular crystalline elements and animated turn signals.

Eight body paint finishes will be available, six of which are all-new, and 17" to 19" wheels. It is the more aerodynamically optimised body shape that has reduced the coefficient of air resistance to 0.23, down from 0.25 for the estate. The Superb has a record large boot - the liftback has 645 litres, while the estate with full electric lid has up to 690 litres.

Interior with new dashboard concept

The all-new, horizontally positioned dashboard already includes a pair of 10" screens at the base. On one are the digital alarms and on the other the free-standing central display of the new-generation infotainment system. However, the central screen can be as small as 13" for an extra cost. Also a major new feature for the Skoda brand is the change in the location of the gear selector for the DSG automatic gearbox, as it moves from the centre tunnel to behind the steering wheel on the right-hand side.

There are therefore larger storage spaces within the central tunnel. A new feature is a slot with 15 W wireless charging, which is also cooled to prevent phones from overheating. In keeping with tradition, there is no shortage of clever Simply Clever solutions, of which there are to be up to 28. There will be a choice of three types of front seats (cloth Loft and Lounge or leather Suite), all of the fabrics being made from recycled materials.

Skoda comes with improved circular dials called Smart Dials - the three rotary dials will be used primarily to adjust the ventilation temperature or volume, but thanks to their configuration it will be possible to set secondary functions. The driver can then change the functionality of the circular dial via the centre display, allowing them to change driving modes, navigate the map or adjust seat heating/ventilation.

Continues to offer a wide range of motorisations

Despite the fact that the biggest intergenerational progress is brought by the plug-in hybrid, which now combines the 1.5 TSI unit and an electric motor, Skoda remains faithful to the primarily 2-litre engines. The new mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI is the mainstay of the range, but the two-litre TSI and TDI engines continue to play a major role, each in two power outputs, with the most powerful equipped with four-wheel drive as standard. At the same time, the Superb also comes as standard with a DSG automatic transmission - a plug-in hybrid in a 6-speed version, while the rest of the range relies on a 7-speed automatic.

    • 1.5 eTSI - 110 kW/150 hp
    • 1.5 TSI iV - 150 kW/204 hp
    • 2.0 TSI - 150 kW/204 hp or 195 kW/265 hp (4x4)
    • 2.0 TDI - 110 kW/150 hp or 142 kW/193 hp (4x4)

The mild-hybrid with iV is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of up to 25.7 kWh. The electric range is thus set to exceed 100 kilometres in accordance with the WLTP methodology, and the system supports not only 11 kW AC but also up to 50 kW DC charging. Another key technical innovation is the option of the optional DCC Plus adaptive dampers - their two-valve solution is designed to achieve a better ability to individually filter out unevenness, which is to be reflected in even greater comfort, while at the same time offering a more noticeable difference between the individual stiffness settings.
