Playstation Controller with a Touch Panel? Thanks to Sony, Gamers Could Customize Button Layouts

TECH

Sony has patented a gaming controller with flexible controls. A touch screen would replace traditional buttons, allowing players to adjust their size, position, or number based on the specific game.

Sony is introducing a new upgrade that’ll thrill many gamers. Game controllers don’t change much, and their basic design has been the same for years. Two sticks, a directional pad, and several buttons usually have the same layout across most consoles, reports VGC.

But according to a new patent, Sony is considering breaking this long-standing standard and giving players more control. The patent, recently approved for Sony, describes a concept for a controller based on touchscreen technology.

This means that a large touchscreen would replace the old setup, displaying control elements that are software-generated. This change aims to replace the universal layout that might not suit all players equally.

The whole idea is to let gamers customize their controllers. Every player has different habits and grip styles, while the hardware is designed to be the same for everyone. Sony hints in their patent that this uniformity is a weakness of current controllers.
