South Korea has managed to hit the spot with the badass series Squid Game, and its high popularity among Netflix subscribers is evidence of that. Just over a week after its release on the streaming platform, everyone is interested in what makes this Netflix series unique.
At a first glance, viewers may be fascinated by the very theme, built on a dangerous game involving big money. In the first three episodes, we follow the lives of several main characters drowning in debt.
There's a charismatic gangster, a confused gambler, a grateful and hard-working Pakistani, a financial fraudster and many others. They got themselves into financial trouble in various ways, so they embarked on a mysterious game that could possibly redeem them from all the debt.
The series immediately raises the question of whether money is more than human life and at the same time whether it is possible to cover debts that have exceeded the acceptable limit by saving up. The introduction is a bit slower, but the patient viewers have something to look forward to.
In order to get us to sweat a little while watching the struggle for survival from the comfort of our homes, the creators quickly introduce us to all the important characters that we'll be seeing in most episodes. Also, props for not using flashback clichés, but the present moment instead.
At the same time, they make a clear point that they will not take it easy on the individual players at all. We certainly should not expect that all of our favorites will be able to make it through. Let's be ready for a ruthless Game of Thrones style approach here.
Already in the first third of the introductory season, Squid Game won us over with excellent action scenes that will definitely please every slightly perverted spectator and lover of bloody massacres. Visually, they are really great. The filmmakers highlight all the essential shots in a fitting way with a thrilling soundtrack.
In order not to quickly get used to the pace of action and fights, after each adrenaline experience we have the opportunity to follow calmer dialogues of the main characters. There are also emotional conversations and arguments, during which we felt just as tense as if looking at a human brain spilling out.
Even with the ruthless shots, the screenwriters did not omit the occasional humor, which felt appropriate in most cases. However, we are a little disappointed that the development of some characters is relatively easy to predict, robbing us of some shocking moments.
In the upcoming episodes, we may ask ourselves whether the secret organization behind the series of games has a weak spot, or whether it really can't be prevented from committing immoralities on poor people. Certain logical fallacies could be found, relatively speaking, and if some of the players spot them in time, the criminals in the background might be in for a real problem.
The Squid Game has a really solid 8.5 / 10 on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing of this article, and viewers of the series gave it 4.4 / 5. If you don't like to risk things, don't have too much time for series and prefer to stay on the safe side, Squid Game definitely won't disappoint you.
