Spotify Changes How We Discover Music: New SongDNA Feature Reveals Hidden Connections and Track Backgrounds

MUSIC

Streaming giant Spotify is rolling out something new that will excite not only casual listeners but also true music aficionados.

Spotify is introducing a new feature called SongDNA that reveals hidden connections and the background of songs. According to Spotify, this interactive feature is built right into the currently-playing song view. By clicking on the SongDNA tab, listeners can dive into a rich network of information.

Users can smoothly move from one creator to another, discover who else was involved in the production, what musical motifs or samples shaped the final sound, and even check out different versions of the song that inspired the original piece. It's a significant expansion of the previous About the Song feature, with SongDNA transforming passive credit reading into an immersive discovery experience.

Apart from enhancing the user experience, SongDNA also has significant industry impact. It shines a light on the people behind the music production scenes, like composers, sound engineers, and lyricists, who often miss out on well-deserved recognition in the digital streaming era.

Jacqueline Ankner, head of songwriter and publisher partnerships at Spotify, emphasized in an official statement that the feature not only brings transparency to the creative process but also makes it easier for industry folks to find new collaborators. Authorized artists and labels will also be able to manage this info directly through the Spotify for Artists interface, keeping control of their musical story.

The new feature is currently in beta testing and is gradually being rolled out to Premium users worldwide. Mobile device owners with iOS and Android systems should have full access to the interactive music credits by April when the global rollout is expected to be completed.
