The plot puts the main characters in a tough spot. The wife is not only battling a serious cancer, but once the couple arrives in a small town, they find themselves stuck in a mysterious, almost-empty hotel called the Grand Imperial. Its halls are filled with strange characters, from an eccentric aging singer to a mysterious healer. As the story unfolds, the couple faces not just the orphanage bureaucracy but gradually loses confidence in their marriage and reality itself.
