The horror film "Sinners" and the action drama "One Battle After Another" have the most chances to win an Oscar.
On the night from Sunday to Monday, the film Oscars will be awarded in Los Angeles, California. The 98th annual ceremony of these prestigious awards by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will take place at the Dolby Theatre.
The favorites for winning an Oscar are "Sinners" and "One Fight After Another"
AMPAS will present awards in 24 categories, including a new one for Best Casting. The glamorous evening will be hosted for the second consecutive year by American comedian Conan O'Brien.
The Academy announced the nominations on January 22. The films with the best chances of winning Oscars are the horror film "Sinners" and the action drama "One Fight After Another." "Sinners" has received a total of 16 nominations, setting a new record.
The favored drama "One Fight After Another" starring Leonardo DiCaprio received three fewer nominations. "Sinners," a blues-infused drama by director Ryan Coogler set in the 1930s segregated southern United States, broke the previous record of 14 nominations, held by films like "All About Eve" (1950), "Titanic" (1997), and "La La Land" (2016). "Sinners" also set a record for the most nominations for Black creators in a single film, with ten nominations.
Coogler, known for "Black Panther" (2018), could become the first Black man to win the Best Director award in the Oscars' 98-year history.
The season favorite is the American action drama "One Fight After Another," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie highlights, among other things, the deeply divided American society resolving conflicts with weapons. Anderson, one of the greatest directors of American cinema in the 21st century, could win his first Oscar.
Films "Frankenstein" (directed by Guillermo del Toro), "Big Marty" (directed by Josh Safdie), and "Emotional Value" (directed by Joachim Trier) each received nine nominations, while the historical biographical drama "Hamnet" (directed by Chloé Zhao) secured eight nominations. A total of ten films are competing for the Best Picture for the year 2025.
Top Picks Among Nominated Actresses
The Best Actress Oscar will go to one of these five: Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve, or Emma Stone. Kate Hudson, who starred in "Sad Song," received her second Oscar nomination after a quarter-century.
Last time she was nominated was for her role in "Almost Famous" (2001). Competing for Best Supporting Actress are Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Teyana Taylor.
Actor Favorites
In the Best Actor category, contenders include Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan, and Wagner Moura. For their performances in a supporting role, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, and Stellan Skarsgard are in the running. Benicio del Toro has waited over 20 years for another Oscar nomination, while Sean Penn might win his third Oscar.
Barbra Streisand is set to perform a tribute to Robert Redford, her co-star from "The Way We Were" (1973), who passed away last September.
Broadcast Revolution of the Ceremony
This year's 98th Oscars ceremony will be one of the last broadcast on television. After the 100th anniversary celebration, the live broadcast will move to the YouTube platform.
Last year's Oscars were dominated by the comedy-drama "Anora," directed by Sean Baker. Baker himself took home three awards for "Anora," while American actress Mikey Madison surprisingly won Best Actress. Best Actor went to Adrien Brody for his role in "The Brutalist." In supporting roles, Kieran Culkin won for "True Pain" and Zoe Saldana for "Emilia Pérez."
