The actor is a hot favorite for winning an Oscar, but he might have just messed it up.
Timothée Chalamet had a chat with Matthew McConaughey for Variety and CNN, where they talked about the future of cinema. One thing they touched on was whether people still care about slower films or if the audience's attention span is too disrupted. The star of Marty Supreme had a pretty clear opinion on that.
“I don’t want to work in ballet or opera where I’m being told to keep something alive that no one’s interested in anymore,” he boldly said. He added that he respects people in ballet and opera, but that didn’t impress anyone much. “Why are certain artists taking shots at other artists,” was a response shared on Instagram by Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
He Diminished the Importance of These Fields. They Responded.
His comment sparked backlash from the classical arts world, with institutions like the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Ballet and Opera in London standing up for the significance of these art forms.
The Czech State Opera, National, and Estates Theatre responded too, with a joint video showing clips of sold-out shows and standing ovations. Teatro alla Scala Opera House in Milan also shared a video with loud applause during a standing ovation, emphasizing, “People do care.”
The statement was even more surprising given that Chalamet's mom was a ballet dancer, his sister trained at the School of American Ballet, his grandma danced on Broadway, and he himself is a former theater actor.
Chalamet stirred up some drama and might have even hurt his Oscar chances, where he’s nominated for Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme. Let’s see how it all plays out!
