Ever dreamed of having your own island? Visit Sweden is launching a campaign to make this dream a reality.
The tourism organization is launching an initiative giving away five private islands to let people experience “the Swedish view on freedom and responsibility in nature,” writes EuroNews.
As Susanne Andersson, the director of Visit Sweden, explains, the country has the most islands in the world and wants to share the purest form of luxury—peace and harmony. The campaign aims to redefine luxury as not about material excess but about tranquility and freedom. That’s why all billionaires are strictly excluded from entering the contest.
Which islands can you win?
Up for grabs are five idyllic islands: Medbådan, Flisan, Storberget, Tjuvholmen, and Marsten. The enticing prize also includes round-trip airfare to Sweden for two people. However, getting to the island itself is up to you. Organizers note that winners should be ready to rent a kayak, paddleboard, or small boat.
If you’re dreaming of building a luxurious resort, slow down a bit. The winner doesn't get permanent ownership and can’t even rename the island. Instead, they become the official “island custodian” with the right to use it for one year, confirmed with a special diploma.
During this time, you can camp, swim, hang out in nature, and invite friends. Everything must, however, be done with respect for the local flora and fauna. Also, keep in mind that Swedish laws guarantee the right of public access to nature, so other tourists might stop by your island from time to time.
How to become a lord of the island?
The contest is open to international travelers over 18, obviously, except for the mentioned billionaires. Participants need to shoot a short video, up to a minute long, explaining why they should win the island.
You can boost your chances by sharing your video on social media with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland. You have until April 17, 2026, to submit your entry. The most creative entries will be chosen by a panel, and the names of the new custodians will be announced in May of this year.
