Toxic Romance Wins Big: 'Wuthering Heights' Smashes Box Office Records

MOVIES & SERIES

The long-awaited film romance inspired by Emily Brontë’s novel, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, hit theaters on Thursday, February 12th. Since then, it’s been breaking records, becoming the highest-grossing film of the weekend.

Wuthering Heights might have become the most criticized film of recent times in just a week, but the creators don't need to feel down. This controversial romance turned into a box office hit. After an extended Valentine's opening weekend, it raked in 82 million dollars worldwide (about 1.68 billion crowns), with almost half of that coming from the United States.

On its premiere day, Wuthering Heights earned 11 million dollars, about 225 million crowns, in American theaters, reports Variety. By the end of the first weekend, it had grossed 35 million dollars, roughly 715 million crowns. During the Valentine’s weekend, it dominated the theaters, securing the top spot far ahead of other new releases.

In 76 other countries, the film grossed 42 million dollars, around 838 million crowns. The largest foreign markets were the United Kingdom with 10.3 million dollars (210 million crowns), Italy with 4.4 million dollars (90 million crowns), and Australia with 4.3 million dollars (88 million crowns).

Mixed Reviews

The audience and critics are split down the middle on Heights, with half reacting negatively or indifferently and the other half praising it. On Metacritic, it got a 56 percent score from critics; 40 percent rated it positively, 49 had mixed feelings, and 11 percent were negative. From the audience, it scored 53 percent, averaging 42 percent positive, 28 mixed, and 30 percent negative responses. These numbers might still evolve.

Following Wuthering Heights was the animated film GOAT, then the crime movie with Chris Hemsworth Crime 101, the deserted island thriller SOS, and rounding out the top five is the romantic comedy Solo Mio, as shown by the IMDb box office chart.
