One night will offer not one, but two interesting astronomical phenomena.
The winter sky will put on an exceptional show in early February 2026. On Sunday, February 1st at 11:09 PM, the so-called Snow Moon will appear, which will be one of the most prominent astronomical events of this winter, according to the website iMeteo.sk.
Where can you watch the Snow Moon in Slovakia?
The February full moon is the second of 13 full moons in the year 2026. The name Snow Moon comes from the Native Americans and refers to the period of heavy frosts and frequent snowfall. This year, the name will be fitting, as the Moon is expected to illuminate the snow particularly in higher-altitude areas of Slovakia.
The best time for viewing will be after sunset when the Moon appears above the eastern horizon. The winter air is usually clearer, making the details of the lunar surface more visible. A telescope isn’t necessary, but it will enhance the experience.
According to forecasts, the eastern parts of Slovakia might have better conditions, while the west may experience some cloud cover that could complicate the viewing.
The exciting celestial events continue after the full moon
On the night of Monday, February 2nd, a rare occultation of the bright star Regulus in the constellation Leo will occur, which won't happen from our region again for several years.
Thus, February kicks off a series of significant astronomical phenomena in 2026, including a total lunar eclipse in March and an annular solar eclipse in the latter half of the month.
