The new horror series The Midnight Club, which was released on Netflix on Friday, October 7, set a new record for the number of so-called jump scares i.e. sudden scares (such as a monster jumping out of the dark), in one episode. By doing so, it was officially registered in the Guinness Book of Records, Variety reports.
The premiere episode of the horror series The Midnight Club, which was inspired by the series of novels of the same name by Christopher Pike, contains 21 jump scares, which is currently the most in one episode of a TV series.
A representative of the Guinness Book of Records presented the certificate to director Mike Flanagan, who is the show runner of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass.
The ten-part series takes place in 1994 at Brightcliffe Hospice, which has become a home for terminally ill teenagers. It is a suitable place for them, where they can die peacefully in their own way. However, the teenager Ilonka (Iman Benson), who is going to Stanford University, is skeptical after being admitted to the hospital. She has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, but more than the disease, she worries about the hospice's haunted history.
Ilonka and seven other patients found the Midnight Club, a group of patients who meet in the corridors of the hospital at midnight. They seem to miraculously come to life, literally. Everyone in the club made an agreement that whoever dies first will give the group a sign from the grave.
"The story is about teenagers who have to come to terms with terminal illnesses and with death," Flanagan described the literary work by Christopher Pike. "It was a really good example of how you can use a novel to talk about serious things. It took my breath away."
