Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a new law that will allow the Ukrainian authorities to confiscate the assets of those who support the Russian invasion. The law was approved by the Ukrainian parliament in a vote on May 12, after Zelensky modified the initial approved version and sent it back to the Verkhovna Rada for revision.

The new law will provide the Ukrainian government with the tools to confiscate property owned by a person who proves to be supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. By law, Ukraine will be able to confiscate the assets of such persons or seize the capital they have directly or indirectly at their disposal.

"The procedure of identifying and confiscating the property of sanctioned persons, which in one way or another supports the aggression of the occupiers towards Ukraine, will make it possible to replenish the Ukrainian state budget quickly and effectively at the expense of the enemy. The law provides clear instructions to the responsible institutions on how this process should take place," said Zelensky himself in his opinion on the law on the official website of the president.

In practice, the law should work in such a way, that the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, on the basis of a decision of the National Security Defense Council, will take steps to confiscate the property of identified persons and entities. The main goal of the law should be Russian and Belarusian citizens supporting aggression in Ukraine.

The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine will decide on the confiscation of property, on which the law sets a decision-making period of no more than ten days. Confiscation will be possible not only in Ukraine but also in foreign territories.

The law could also affect the Russian state apparatus and the Russian soldiers fighting on the front. People who buy Russian government bonds or television propagandists calling for violence against the Ukrainian people will also face a possible confiscation of property in Ukraine. Ukrainian citizens will not be subject to the law unless they are engaged in terrorist activities.
