The issue with carelessly tossed electronic cigarettes is taking on a new and concerning dimension. It could be life-threatening for animals.
Images of animals interacting with human waste aren’t exactly new, but modern e-cigarettes have become a major attraction for wildlife. In the past, it was rare to see a squirrel with a traditional cigarette butt, but today’s colorful devices with flavors like wild berries or melon are like a magnet for their senses.
According to the New York Post, recent videos from London’s Brixton and Philadelphia in the U.S. show squirrels holding vapes in their paws, chomping on them as if they've found a treat.
Craig Shuttleworth, a squirrel expert from Bangor University in Wales, explains that animals unknowingly expose themselves to huge risks this way. Apart from the direct danger of swallowing toxic nicotine, which they never encounter in their natural environment, they ingest harmful microplastics and other chemicals when gnawing on the plastic casings.
Representatives from the UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) have called this phenomenon a stark reminder of the deadly threat toxic waste poses to wildlife.
This issue goes beyond just urban rodents. Even more alarming are statistics related to pets. Since 2017, veterinary poison information services have received hundreds of reports of vape-related incidents, with most cases involving dogs. There have been tragic instances where pets have died on the spot after ingesting e-cigarette fluid.
It’s not just animals that e-cigarettes harm. Although these devices were originally marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, more and more medical studies link them to heart disease, serious lung issues, and even dementia.
