66% of Gen Z and Millennials End Their Workday in Pain: What You Should Know About Sedentary Jobs

OTHER

A few surprising facts about life in a modern office.

Did you know we spend an average of 82,000 hours working in our lifetime? It's a fascinating yet alarming number, especially when you realize that most of us accept a stiff neck, sore back, or wrist pain as an inevitable part of the workday.

The main issue isn't the length of work. Regional surveys show that up to half of Czechs (52%) suffer from back pain, but only 13% pay attention to choosing their work tools when using a computer. Most use whatever they find on the desk.

We Sit More Than Astronauts in Space

Astronauts actually spend less time sitting daily than the average office worker. Long hours in front of a computer change the way your body functions—slowing metabolism, weakening core muscles, and increasing spinal pressure. This leads to lower back pain, fatigue, and the feeling that after work, we can't do anything.

Surprisingly, it's not just older generations experiencing this problem. Younger generations aged 18-34 (Gen Z and Millennials) report a higher rate of discomfort—66% of them end the day in pain. Early signs of chronic issues suggest that the incoming digital generation is underestimating prevention.

Personalized settings tailored to body size and individual needs can make a huge difference in comfort and performance. Technology must support inclusive innovation, where the workspace serves the user, says Delphine Donné, VP & General Manager, Logitech Personal Workspace Solutions.

Women Feel More Discomfort

Data also reveals a gender difference. In Germany, for instance, 58% of women report end-of-day pain compared to 42% of men. Why? Modern offices have historically been designed for men's proportions—ergonomic standards come from the male body.

Most peripherals are black, bulky, and too large for smaller female hands. Women generally have shorter forearms, narrower shoulders, and lower body height. All of this affects how far they have to reach for the mouse, keyboard, or monitor. Ergonomics must be inclusive. If you have small to medium-sized hands, a vertical mouse like the Logitech Lift is not a luxury but a tool respecting your anatomy.

Women often contend with office temperatures as well. They naturally have a lower basal metabolism, making them feel colder—and when you're cold, muscles tense up, especially trapezius and neck muscles.

Your Neck is Holding the Weight of a Bowling Ball

Laptops are convenient but ergonomically challenging. The screen is low, the keyboard is fixed to the display, and your body has to adjust to the device.

An adult's head weighs about six kilograms—similar to a two-year-old child. Even a ten-degree tilt toward the screen doubles the load on the cervical spine. And worse, the longer you stay in this position, the more natural it feels. Muscles that should support the spine gradually switch off, leaving the work to tendons and ligaments, which aren't designed for long-term static load.

👉 Quick Fix Tip: Raise the top third of your screen to eye level. It doesn't matter if you use a laptop stand, shoe box, or stack of books—the key is to stop looking down. This simple move will immediately relieve neck strain and prevent chronic overload.

Touchpad: A Hidden Enemy of Productivity and Muscles

Using a touchpad might seem practical, but biomechanically, it's a high physical burden. The wrist is in an unnatural, slightly twisted position, and movement is limited to a small area. Every click and cursor movement involves a series of micro-movements that add up throughout the day. This increases muscle activity in the neck and shoulders by up to 45% and in the forearm by 25%.

Data from Logi Ergo Lab shows that using an external mouse boosts productivity by up to 50% thanks to increased speed and accuracy. The vertical Lift model holds the hand at a natural 57-degree angle (handshake position), eliminating pressure on the carpal tunnel and relaxing forearm muscles.

9 out of 10 People Prefer Ergonomic Devices

The strongest evidence of the importance of ergonomics is a lasting change in behavior. 9 out of 10 people who switch to an ergonomic keyboard or mouse never return to traditional models. Not due to marketing but because of immediate physical relief.

For instance, the Wave Keys keyboard with its wavy shape and memory foam wrist rest allows wrists to stay in a natural position. Once you experience a workday without burning forearms, traditional flat keyboards start to feel like tools from the past century. Ergonomics isn't just a marketing term; it's an investment in your comfort and health.

The Future of Work: Ritual Rescue

Ritual Rescue is a set of small, consciously repeated actions that make work more enjoyable, protect the body, and improve the quality of the work environment. It's a series of micro-ergonomic steps that seem subtle but when they become a ritual, your body starts functioning better.

You need a routine that doesn't wear down your body but regenerates it—get the right tools. Just as a worker wouldn't get far with the wrong size shovel, you won't perform your best without a proper monitor, keyboard, and mouse that fit your hands.

These basic ergonomic rules should be followed:

  • The 90-90-90 Rule: Adjust your chair and desk so your elbows, hips, and knees are at right angles. Feet should be flat on the ground. Proper seating is foundational.
  • The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (around six meters) away for 20 seconds. Your eyes need a break from blue light and constant close-up focus.
  • Active Breaks: Every hour, spend 20 seconds gently rotating your wrists and stretching your palms. It's a good idea to step away from the computer and take a few steps—get some water, stretch your back, or take a short walk around the office.
