The Bassist Every Rapper Wants. "Mac Miller Was My Best Friend. I Always Feel the Love in Prague," Says Thundercat

MUSIC

Ready for a journey to another galaxy? The eccentric artist Thundercat is here to take you there, performing at Prague's Roxy club on March 10th. A few days before the show, we chatted with him about music, animations, and his friendship with the late Mac

On Spotify, he's listened to by nearly 12 million people monthly. Besides his solo work, he's collaborated or continues to collaborate with most of today's top rappers. These include Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Childish Gambino, and Tyler, The Creator.

Thundercat is now synonymous with being an elite bass guitarist who defies genres. He started out in the thrash metal band Suicidal Tendencies, and today he bridges the worlds of neo-soul, R&B, jazz, and hip-hop. His tracks and visuals are always a vibrant mix, where you can't miss the artist's love for anime and retro console games.

In Prague, Thundercat last performed solo in 2017. Back then, he showcased the album Drunk and called his daughter from the stage during the show. Now he's back as an established star, and thanks to Fource promoters, he’ll present his new album Distracted at Roxy Club. The Czech audience will hear some of the songs live on March 10th, just under a month before the album's release.

It features guests like A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, Willow, and the irreplaceable Mac Miller. Thundercat made history alongside Mac with their iconic Tiny Desk performance, which has garnered over 142 million views on YouTube.

In an interview with Refresher, we talked with Thundercat about his musical collaborations and his current album. We also touched on his other non-musical projects—like the musical Yo Gabba Gabba! or the series The Book of Boba Fett, where the bass guitarist had a cameo role. “I’ll smile whenever I think about it. It was one of the best moments of my life,” Thundercat says, adding, “When they asked if I was a big Star Wars fan, I told them I had a lightsaber on my belt while accepting my first Grammy.”

Thundercat joined our video call from Los Angeles, where it was about nine in the morning. He gradually convinced us what a cool guy he is and why everyone wants to make music with him. You can find the full interview on the website and Refresher's YouTube channel.
