Who would have thought a childhood passion from the '90s could become one of the most profitable investments of the decade?

The well-known YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul has just rewritten collector history. His rare card, the “Pikachu Illustrator”, sold at auction for an astronomical sum, officially setting a new Guinness World Record for the most expensive trading card ever auctioned, reports CNN.

The auction on the Goldin platform lasted an intense 42 days, but the real frenzy happened in the final hours. The card, which Paul bought five years ago for a then-record $5.27 million, shot up to a final price of $16.49 million.

For the controversial internet star, this means a net profit exceeding $8 million. Paul, who watched the auction finale live with his fans, couldn't hide his emotions and called the result “absolutely insane”.

What makes this piece so special?

It's considered the “holy grail” among Pokémon cards. The Pikachu Illustrator card was released in a limited run of 39 at the end of the 90s as a prize in an illustrator contest. Paul's copy is unique due to its condition—it's the only card of its kind in the world with a “Gem Mint 10” rating from PSA, meaning it's in absolutely flawless condition.

The new owner isn't just taking home a piece of paper in a plastic case. The card was auctioned in a special case set in a luxury necklace adorned with diamonds. It's the same piece of jewelry Logan Paul wore during his debut at WWE's WrestleMania 38. Part of the deal includes personal delivery of this gem directly from Logan Paul himself, adding a touch of exclusivity to the transaction.
