Winning an Olympic bronze should have been the peak of his sports career, but it turned into a personal confession. Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid publicly admitted to infidelity and apologized to his former partner after the race. Now, she's res

Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid caused quite a stir after admitting to infidelity during a live broadcast shortly after winning a bronze medal at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. In an interview with Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, he said that three months ago he “made the biggest mistake of his life” by cheating on his partner, hoping that a public confession might help save their relationship.

His emotional revelation overshadowed even the sporting achievements. His compatriot Johan-Olav Botn won gold and dedicated the medal to a deceased friend, but his gesture was eclipsed by Lægreid’s teammate. Lægreid later realized that the timing of his personal confession wasn’t ideal and admitted it to NRK.

Following the media storm, his former partner also commented on the situation, giving a statement to the Norwegian daily VG under the condition of anonymity. “It's very hard to forgive him, even after he declared his love to the whole world. I didn't choose to be in this position. It hurts to go through all this,” she said.

In interviews, Lægreid admitted that he told his partner about the infidelity just before the Olympics and described the past few days as the most difficult in his life. His words were quoted by international media including Variety, which called the moment one of the most unusual personal confessions in Olympic broadcasting.

The incident also sparked a broader discussion about the boundaries between athletes' privacy and public space during major events. While some appreciated his honesty, others pointed out that personal dramas shouldn’t overshadow sports achievements and other participants in the event.
