The film, which YouTuber Markiplier wrote, directed, and fully financed himself, became an absolute hit in the US after its premiere.
Markiplier talked about success during a stream. Even though he got emotional watching the positive reviews and results, his message to the industry was clear. For him and his team, it's not just about the revenue but proof that independent creators can compete with the "big dogs" in Hollywood.
Holding the number two spot at the box office is expected to open doors for the film at prestigious film festivals. According to Fischbach, such success might "legitimize independent creations" in the eyes of the big players and open doors for other creators who want to work outside the studio system.
Battle with Hollywood
The weekend box office was dominated by a duel between two horror titles. On one side is Fischbach's indie project, and on the other is Disney's horror Send Help, directed by Sam Raimi.
Disney's Send Help ended up taking the weekend top spot with an opener of $19.1 million, but Iron Lung was close behind with $17.8 million. Unlike the former, Markiplier's film cost just around $3 million, already managing to nearly sextuple its budget, and it's clear it’s on track to become one of the year's biggest hits. While Disney uses the usual studio machinery, Markiplier ran this project as a “one-man show.” Besides directing and writing, he also distributes the film and plays the lead role.
“Hero moment” for the indie scene
Interestingly, Fischbach initially considered partnering with a big distribution studio. However, after talking to a fan, he chose to stick to the indie path. The fan described this step as a crucial moment that might inspire an entire generation of aspiring creators not to sell their projects to corporations but to try and bring them to life independently.
Iron Lung is based on the 2022 game by David Szymanski. The story follows a man in the claustrophobic confines of a submarine navigating an ocean of blood. Despite its minimalist concept, the film managed to draw record crowds during its opening weekend. In the Czech Republic, the movie is set to premiere in select theaters on Thursday, February 5th.
