The decline in monthly subscribers is forcing Netflix to back away from the projects it promised its viewers. One of them is the animated series Pearl by Meghan Markle. The platform announced it is working on the project last year. Production is now canceled due to the necessary cost reduction, informed The Guardian.
Netflix has suspended project development work due to an outflow of subscribers last month. The series about the adventures of a twelve-year-old girl is inspired by the stories of famous women throughout history and is one of a series of projects which Netflix is giving up. In addition to Pearl, this includes animated Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses.
In the first three months, Netflix's monthly subscribers fell by 200,000. Another two million subscribers are expected to leave by July. Referring to analysts, the BBC says people are leaving the platform to save money as well as due to the huge amount of content that is being poured on them from all possible operators. In such an avalanche of content, viewers may feel a bit suffocated.
The Pearl series was to be produced by Duchess Meghan, along with Elton John's husband David Furnish at Archewell Productions. Meghan founded the production company together with Prince Harry. However, according to Netflix, Archewell Productions will continue to work with the platform to shoot other projects, such as the documentary series about veterans Heart of Invictus.
