The situation between Ukraine and Russia has been tense for years before the war even began. Major problems arose in 2014, when Russia became involved in the Ukrainian revolution triggered by student protests.

The protests were initially sparked by the unexpected decision of Ukraine's top officials to suspend the European integration process. What began as a student protest ended as a revolution, in which Ukrainian citizens succeeded in ousting then-President Viktor Yanukovych.

The situation escalated throughout the country, with particularly strong voices of pro-Russian citizens arising in Crimea. This culminated in the annexation of Crimea by Russia. Netflix's Winter On Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom depicts the events that led here, showing, how the protests grew into a revolution.

The documentary is full of raw footage from the protests, during which lives were lost. This is a good document, that will bring you closer to the understanding of events that led to the current situation in Ukraine.

You can also look into other well-made documents, that explain the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in recent years, such as: Crimea as It Was, Breaking Point: The War for Democracy in Ukraine or The Earth Is Blue as an Orange.
