The internet prank has grown into a worldwide initiative that is now forcing some cinemas to ban suits in their theatres. At the beginning of July, the new film Minions: The Rise Of Gru, which gained popularity on Tik Tok thanks to groups of fans in suits, was released in theatres, writes Newsweek.
Handfuls of young men dressed in suits or tuxedos arrive at movie theatres, sometimes lighting up cigars before the theatre and then entering to enjoy a movie about little yellow characters.

The trend has been labeled #gentleminions, a play on the word gentleman and minion, and since the film's theatrical release, the film's social media marketing team has adopted the moniker.
However, the ironic support of the film in suits was not met with understanding in every cinema where young people came to see the film. In a number of British cinemas, managers have had to ban anyone in "formal attire" from entering the cinema hall, as some groups of fans from the "gentleminions" trend are shouting, clapping loudly in support of the film or even throwing bananas at the screen.
This is unacceptable. #gentleminions #justiceforthegentlemen pic.twitter.com/ub9ZL5OksI

On social media today, you can find dozens of different videos that capture how gentleminions come to cinemas, make hoorah and take pictures in front of movie posters. Sometimes it happens that several groups come to the cinema in suits independently of each other, so they tend to group together, which usually makes them even more annoying to the other viewers in the cinema.
