At the beginning of June, Milan hosted the Design Week, a worldwide design event. Although the core of this week has been furniture design, the exhibitions also focused on technology, fitness equipment (who wouldn't want stylish dumbbells?), the automobile industry, lighting, home accessories, and even cosmetics.

We were at the World Design Week and we bring you a piece of what the well-known brands have come up with. Fashion houses have long been dedicated not only to clothing and accessories, but also to design in the broadest sense of the word. In Milan, they presented their variations of furniture or even entire houses furnished only with their own products. We have selected 5 of them that are absolutely worth your attention.

Brightly elegant Dior chairs

The French fashion house Dior stood out in Milan this year in collaboration with Philippe Starck, a French architect and designer. Starck focuses mainly on product design, and the well-known fashion house asked him to redesign the iconic Medallion Chair, whose roots go back to the 18th century.

He succeeded in redesigning the timeless and elegant piece of furniture: Starck replaced the original wooden frame with upholstery with aluminum in two versions (glossy and matt). The team highlighted the simplicity of the original shape, which is available in four colors: black, rose gold, gold or the original aluminum silver. Dior Maison created a new look for the furniture icon.

The smooth surface reflects light from every angle, so a piece of furniture looks almost like jewel in space. Starck also played with the shape of a chair: in addition to the classic one with two armrests, he also created one that has only one armrest and one that has none. Why? "I would not ask why only one armrest. I would ask: why not?” He replied according to Designboom.

"Some (people) have been looking for the perfect dress all their lives. I've always dreamed of a perfect chair,"  he said. According to him, this chair fulfills a kind of ideal in design and he kept returning to the Medallion Chair in his thoughts in search of the perfect shape. In the furniture collection of the fashion house, this Dior chair is the equivalent of their little black dress.

It is not for nothing that Starck called her Miss Dior (following the pattern of iconic dresses). The clear, reflective surface of the chairs is unmissable in the space where it was presented in Milan. A total of 24 chairs were presented in a dark, floodlit area in the Citterio Palace. They revealed them gradually as in dance choreography. The photos really look like they are from a fashion show - or a dance performance.

These chairs carry a dose of charm and minimalism, but despite the simplicity, it is clear at a first glance that they are luxury furniture. Its price tag on the Dior website is 2,300 euros.

Lots of everything everywhere according to the Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana opened two boutiques with furniture and interior accessories in Milan earlier this year. During the Milan Design Week, they exhibited in both spaces and visitors were greeted with a breathtaking experience. Accessories and furniture from the workshop of a well-known fashion house (or is it time to talk about design houses?) will probably take your breath away with their eccentricity and colours.

The Market Herald aptly described the furniture from the Italian brand's workshop as the work from the lovers of the la dolce vita style under the influence of steroids. It is a maximalist heaven, which may hurt your eyes a little, because it contains literally everything .

The first collection, Blue Mediterraneo, was inspired by Mediterranean motifs. The second, called Caretto, depicts Sicilian aesthetics with traditional ceramics as well. It was this collection that was probably the most significant and resonated on social media platforms. It looks exotic, but in a cluster of colors and patterns it is almost impossible to notice the shapes or approaches to the production of individual pieces of furniture.

The Anemone couch in the photo below is soft and comfortable to the touch. It is woven from silk rips and the print on the fabric is precisely adjusted according to the upholstery, so that the individual pieces fit together perfectly. The print is precise to the last detail and inspired by Sicilian motifs. As you can see, they complemented the couch with a table, pillows, lamps, a tray, glassware, as well as carpets on the floor and on the wall from the same collection. In a clean, inconspicuous room, those products would probably stand out better, but that would no longer be according to the the vision of the exaggerated, perhaps even kitsch taste of the Italian brand.

The price of furniture on the web is only by request, but on the Farfetch website, where they sell interior accessories, you will find, for example, a smaller pillow from the photo below for 295 euros, a larger one is one hundred euros more expensive.

The other two collections paid tribute to animal motifs (zebra and leopard). All Milan showrooms of the Italian brand take your breath away with their color. In addition to furniture and accessories, they also paid special attention to textiles (especially carpets and blankets, but also pillowcases), Murano glass products and Sicilian ceramics.

According to the creative directors of the exhibitions, the atmosphere of exceptionality and amazement was the goal. According to Interni magazine, they rediscovered ancient Italian crafts and recreated them with current trends.

Louis Vuitton

This year, Louis Vuitton celebrated the 10th anniversary of Objets Nomades' collection of furniture and accessories. They have traditionally exhibited new and classic furniture on their premises in Milan and adapted the entire collection to the space of Garage Traversi. It was a huge and bright space, in which the furniture stood out perfectly. Each piece is a unique combination of the creativity of the designer and the skill and know-how of a fashion house, which has top materials and great experts at its disposal.

During the Milan Design Week, the colorful "retro" space became home to five new products and several old acquaintances. The new ones was created in collaboration with the Oï, Campana Brothers and Raw Edges studios in London and they are a redesign of already cult works from the Objets Nomades series.

The Swiss studio Oï are responsible for a new lounge chair and bar stool, as well as a side table, the Campan brothers redesigned their Bomboca couch to a version for 4 people with 11 pillows and also created the Cocoon Chair, a hanging chair inspired by insect balaclavas. The creators from Raw Edges designed the Cosmic Table with an enamelled and glass top.

One of the most expensive pieces in the collection is probably the Bulbo armchair, also from the Campana Brothers workshop. It is the furniture embodiment of an embrace: every leaf of this chair is covered with leather on the outside and upholstered on the inside with a soft cloth. The enticing nest was part of the exhibition and according to the e-shop, they are currently selling it for $ 102,000.

Fendi

Design house Fendi has been making furniture for decades. They got involved in this year's design week in three ways. The new Fendi Casa collection with home accessories was presented in a newly opened flagship store in the center of Milan. It has up to two floors full of their own designs from large pieces of furniture to the smallest interior accessories.

In addition, they exhibited furniture and accessories in a private apartment, which could only be accessed by invitation. There was also a temporary bar during the Milan event, where guests could use Fendi furniture and accessories. It was located directly in the store with the brand's fashion collection. The Pequin striped patterns typical of Fendi were also reflected on the upholstery, couches, pillows and blankets. There was also a brand logo created by Karl Lagerfeld, sensitively hidden in the details of the furniture (for example, at the seams or on the drawer holders).

The house, or rather Villa Fendi, which visitors to Milan could see, was divided into three parts. The first was saturated with colors, the second was inspired by crafts and earthy colors (brown, olive, beige) and natural materials reigned in it. The latter was designed as the family couch, from which it is clear that it should show a homely atmosphere. They used neutral colours.

Hermès

During the design week, the Hermès brand presented 4 massive installations, within which they placed a new collection of home accessories. The installations are made of wood and milk paper and resemble water towers. They exhibited in the dark, the only lights were inside the tower, and thus created a unique background for the exhibited piece.

The main theme of the new collection was (unsurprisingly) lightness. They exhibited new lamps, vases, bowls and other porcelain dishes decorated in gold on stacks of paper. They were inspired by the sun's rays and excelled on paper towers.

Hermès was also inspired by traditional production methods. It combines the knowledge of craftsmen with the work of designers and architects who designed individual pieces of furniture. They also exhibited cashmere textiles, the softest quilts on the planet, which shone directly with colours, or wicker furniture with leather details.

“A sheet of leather, trimmed, bent and hand-painted, will become an ornament on the table. Porcelain plates reflect the sun's rays and the wicker seat makes the chair a charming and robust piece of furniture at the same time," they describe on their website. The creators tried to find a balance between material and colour.

The French house did not disappoint during the Milan event and showed timeless pieces that are suitable as a gift and bring a dose of luxury into the home. If you want to indulge in such an ornament, you can start with lamps, for example (lamps from the collection, which they also exhibited in Milan, cost more than six thousand dollars) and the Oria chair costs about $ 8,400.
