Our monthly streaming services programme is back, although this time around, it will be more or less ruled by Netflix. Of the 10 most anticipated projects we have selected for the article, 8 can be found on Netflix. Fans of anime, documentaries, superhero blockbusters, and drama will all find something to their liking.
Jupiter's Legacy – May 7th
What would retired superheroes look like? There's not many movies or series that elaborate on this. Yes, there was the genius Logan, but it also operated on slightly different topics. However, Jupiter's Legacy presents a team of heroes who have lived like this for a few decades. The plot is based on the comic book by Mark Millar (Kingsman, Wanted, Kick-Ass).
The story focuses on a sort of a generational conflict between the old-school superheroes and their children, who were supposed to protect humanity after the retirement of these veterans. However, the trailer itself suggests that they have chosen a different path.
The trailer looks quite decent. It might be a solid mix of The Umbrella Academy and classic comics, but it's kind of annoying that the only thing that makes the superheroes "old" is the grey hair. You wouldn't otherwise tell them apart from their 40-year old counterparts. If comic book themes, superhuman characters and real action effects is what you're into, be sure to give the series a chance.
The creator and screenwriter is Steven S. DeKnight, who has worked on popular series such as Daredevil, Spartacus and Smallville. And Josh Duhamel from the Transformers might be the most familiar of the actors.
Money, Explained – May 11th
The documentary series Money, made by Vox Entertainment in partnership with Netflix, benefits from an interesting concept. In each episode you get nice visualizations, clear graphics, charts and great explanations, so you'll understand any complex topic within the 20 minutes. Previous series have focused on cultures, music, the human body, cults, sex. Simply all topics imaginable.
The latest parts focus on money and everything related to it. The documentary covers everything from investment funds, financial schemes and fraud to student loans in the US and retirement money. If you are not financially literate, you'll most likely get a lot of valuable advice here.
Castlevania – May 14th
Castlevania is one of the best Netflix series. The adaptation of the famous series of video games is brutal, funny, original, fresh and fun. It never gets boring and you'll immediately fall in love with the group of impeccably written and played characters. In addition, the series boasts great acting performances and breathtaking action when the supernatural creatures battle each other. At the center of the action is actually the last member of the vampire slaying Belmont Clan. And it is him who prepares to lash out on Dracula, who wants to enslave humanity.
Unfortunately, we'll get to see the last season in a few days. It will have 10 episodes and the story will be completely wrapped up in it. The creators have already indicated that we might see some spin-off series revealing other time periods and stories within the world of Castlevania, but in that case we'll probably get to see brand new characters .
If, for some reason, you haven't seen Castlevania yet, make sure to fix it as soon as possible and look forward to the grand finale. And if you don't take our word for it, this trailer will definitely convince you to try it.
Love, Death, & Robots – May 14th
We know we're repeating ourselves, but sometimes it's just necessary. We'll also go ahead and call this series one of the best projects ever created within Netflix. Behind it are David Fincher (Se7en, Mank ...) and Tim Miller (director of Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate), who brought talented filmmakers from around the world together and assembles their great animated short films.
In the first season, we saw 18 impressive shorts focused on a variety of topics ranging from violence, war, monsters, sci-fi themes, horror, romance and sex to philosophical reflections and beautiful poetic or photorealistic animations. Some of the shorts were amazing even from the story side, so we are looking forward to what we'll see after the two years of waiting for the 2nd season.
It will be an anthological format in this case as well, so each episode will have a separate story and will not be followed up on. Netflix also announced that we will see the 3rd season sometime next year.
The Woman in the Window – May 14th
The main character of the thriller The Woman in the Window was played by Amy Adams. She suffers from mental problems, but she manages to make friends with a neighbor living across the street. Subsequently, her life turns upside down. One day she sees her girlfriend being murdered by her husband through a window. But no one believes her, not even the cops. The film is full of plot twists and will probably try to keep the viewer in tension and uncertainty for as long as possible.
Army of the Dead – May 21st
After his Justice League director's cut, Zack Snyder is putting out another action blockbuster. This time from the zombie heist genre. And what's it gonna be like? The story takes place in Las Vegas, where a man gathers a group of mercenaries in the quarantine zone after the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, with whom he tries to commit the biggest robbery in history.
Casinos are full of safes with millions of dollars in them, but getting into a zombie-infested city and escaping it will not be easy at all, as the trailer suggests. The main character seems to be a mercenary played by Dave Bautista (Drax of the Guardians of the Galaxy). And on top of the action itself, it's also interesting that the zombies are somehow more intelligent, capable of acrobatic movements and it will not be easy to kill them.
Eden – May 27th
Third Netflix animated series on this list. This time it's a Japanese anime by director Yasuhir Irie (Fullmetal Alchemist) and designer Toshihir Kawamoto (Cowboy Bebop). They've been creating their collaborative project for many years and it looks very interesting. The story is set thousands of years in the future, when there are only robots remaining on the planet. However, a young girl appears out of nowhere and changes the world. The trailer will tell you more.
Master of None – May 23rd
5 new episodes (all directed by Aziz Ansari) will focus on the character of Denis (Lena Waithe). It will not be a classic season about Dev (Ansari). Despite of that, we are very much looking forward to the new material after four years. Ansari took a break from the series as the main character and its co-creator. Later a woman accused him of sexual harassment.
However, his career is not over and he'll soon entertain us in his amazing world of Master of None. If you haven't caught the series yet, it is guaranteed to get under your skin and into your heart.
On another note, on Netflix you'll also get to see the new series for Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, Lucifer and the interesting-looking drama Oxygen.
Amazon Prime Video
Solos – May 21st
Unfortunately, the trailer for Solos isn't out yet, but we are convinced that it will be an interesting work. It's an anthology series, so each of the 7 episodes will focus on a different story and characters, performed by top actors such as Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren and Anthony Mackie. The series should focus on stories about people and how we're all connected.
Those Who Wish Me Dead – May 14th
The plot focuses on the character of Angelina Jolie named Hannah, who works as a survival expert. She is currently working in the lookout tower, where she arrived after a catastrophic rescue operation during a forest fire, which she blames herself for. Her character thus bears a huge degree of responsibility for the lives of others.
That's probably why she'll want to save the little boy's innocent life. He and his father have witnessed a murder. The killers will now do everything they can to kill the witnesses. You should see this film, as the script and direction were done by Taylor Sheridan (screenwriter of both Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River). In addition to Angelina Jolie, we will also see Jon Bernthal, Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger from Game of Thrones) and Nicolas Hoult.
The film has published one trailer in which it already looks brilliant. Given the quality of the creators, the attractiveness of the trailer and the actors, this is a movie that must be seen. We are also very curious about the performance and Hollywood comeback of Angelina Jolie.
