Playstation Is Introducing Competition For the Game Pass. You Will Soon Be Able To Play PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 Games On the PS5

Playstation revealed that it is modifying its PS + service. Its subscribers will receive two or three free games each month (they can play them as long as they pay for the PS + each month), the opportunity to play multiplayer online, and additional bonuses and discounts. PS Plus will be divided into three tiers, each with different benefits and a different price tag.

Playstation Plus Essential

This is the same service that is on offer now, so the classic PS Plus with no changes.

Playstation Plus Extra

  • Catalog with around 400 PS4 and PS5 games, including great exclusives from Playstation Studios. You will be able to download the games.
  • When it comes to Playstation exclusivity, games such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11 and Returnal will be available.
  • Price: 14 euro monthly, 40 euro quarterly, 100 euro annually

Playstation Plus Premium

  • All the benefits of Playstation Plus Essential +
  • Additional 340 games (so about 750 in total) including PS3 games (you'll only be able to stream them online) and selected titles from the PS1, PS2 and PSP eras. Some you will be able to download, others just stream.
  • This subscription will allow you to try selected games before you buy them (demo versions).
  • Price: 17 euro monthly, 50 euro quarterly a 120 eur annually. 

The new PS Plus is the response to the Xbox Game Pass service. However, we cannot directly compare them as the services are very different and offer different modes of play.

First of all, don't expect to play big Playstation exclusives on PS Plus the day they come out. You will play the new Halo or Forzu Horizon on the Game Pass on the day of the release, so you don't have to pay 60 euros for new games, but the head of the Playstation doesn't want to do that yet.

At the same time, he claims that the market is changing and that their decisions may change in the future. At the moment, games such as God of War and Spider-Man are perceived as very sophisticated and expensive blockbusters, which can be so high quality precisely because people buy them full-price and the creators can use this money to develop other games.

What remains unkown? Whether iconic PS1, PS2 and PSP games can be downloaded from the Playstation Store without paying for more expensive subscription versions. This would come in handy if you only want to play two classic PS1 games and don't want to pay for the whole service. We also do not know which games will be in the catalog, nor whether they will offer any improvements (better resolution, loading times or better frame rate / fps)

The Playstation studio would like to launch the service by the end of the first half of 2022 and will be subsequently adding countries to the list, where the PS Now is currently available.
