Russia rejects the allegations that they are inciting a global food crisis as a result of their invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine is one of the world's major producers of grain, and the Russian military has devastated its crops, agriculture and disrupted grain export from the country.

The reduction in grain export from Ukraine raises concerns about globally rising food prices and also about an increase in the number of hungry people in the world. "As far as we know, there is much less grain than the Ukrainians say. There is no need to exaggerate the importance of these grain stocks," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, adding that grain in Ukraine is too small a percentage to have an impact on the development of the food crisis, which has already begun.

He added that the Ukrainian crisis did not cause or accelerate the food crisis in the world. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said something similar, claiming, that the current situation with Ukrainian grain has nothing to do with the food crisis.

Russia and Ukraine produce 30% of the world's wheat supply. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that about 20 to 25 million tons of grain were stuck in Ukrainian ports blocked by Russia and that this amount could rise to 70 to 75 million tons by the autumn. Despite the fact that the Ukrainian crop was devastated by the Russians, they claim that it was the sanctions of the West against Russia that contributed to the food crisis.
