35% Of Russians Believe That The Sun Revolves Around The Earth. Every Fifth Thinks That Dinosaurs Lived Alongside The First People

A third of Russians believe that the Sun revolves around the Earth. Every fifth Russian believes that the first people on Earth lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. These findings emerged from a new survey by the Russian state agency VCIOM, which surveys public opinion on various issues.

In its latest survey, VCIOM focused on scientific myths believed by the people of Russia. The survey showed that up to 35 percent of Russians think that the Sun revolves around the Earth.

Therefore, the agency draws conclusions from the results by stating that even in 2022 there will be a lot of fans of the theory of geocentrism in Russia. In the last 15 years, the number of people who believe this theory has increased by 7 percentage points from 28 percent.

The rotation of the Sun around the Earth was not the only question raised in the survey. Even today, 7 percent of Russians believe that radioactive milk will no longer pose a risk to human health if it is simply boiled on the stove.

Every fifth person, or 21 percent of those polled, thinks that the first primitive people walked the earth at the same time as the dinosaurs.

In fact, at least 65 million years have passed since the last dinosaur disappeared from the earth's surface and the first man appeared. In 2007, when the VCIOM conducted this survey, up to 30 percent of respondents believed in theconcurrent life of humans and dinosaurs on Earth.

In the survey, the Russians did not even respond to the question of whether genetically modified foods cause cancer. "44 percent of Russians believe that GMO foods can cause cancer. According to 32 percent of respondents, genetically modified foods will be able to defeat hunger in the world," the agency's website states.

Despite the high proportion of incorrect answers, the VCIOM notes that, in general, the rate of incorrect answers is decreasing. "The general level of scientific literacy in the population is gradually increasing," the survey agency concludes.
