Two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, lost their lives on Friday during a shark attack in Egypt near the Red sea coast. Both women were attacked by a shark while swimming South of Hurghada. It is unknown whether it was the same shark.

People are rarely attacked

According to APA Agency, the Austrian woman was a 68-year old from Tirol who was vacationing in Egypt. She lost an arm and a leg during the attack and died in the hospital.

Romanian ministry of foreign affairs has confirmed another death on Sunday with reference to information received from Egyptian authorities.

The offices of the Red sea Governorate have ordered all beaches in the area to shut down.

The Red sea is a favorite tourist destination where the presence of sharks is common, but they rarely attack people swimming in marked zones.

In 2018, a Czech tourist has died there during a shark attack, and in 2015 a German tourist became a victim. During 5 days in 2010, 5 shark attacks took place near the resort Sharm Ash Shaykh, during which a German citizen was killed and other four foreign tourists were injured.

Egypt quite extensively relies on income from tourism precisely from the Red sea area where approximately 65% of tourists visiting the country are headed.

It is necessary to expect this kind of situation, since sharks are at home in the sea. The non-traditional shark behavior may have been caused by a recently sunk ship with a number of sheep, says Roman Berkes, a travel agency representative. Sharks could have started to act unfathomable. Experts recommend the tourists to avoid swimming in early morning hours and late in the afternoon.
