On Wednesday, the European Commission proposed a ban on the sale of flavoured heated tobacco products in Europe. They are responding to the growing popularity of these products and the associated health concerns.

European Union Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakidis said in a statement that up to nine out of ten cases of lung cancer are caused by the use of tobacco products.

"We want smoking to be as unappealing to people as possible, to protect the health of our people and save lives," she added.

A ban on the sale of heated flavored tobacco products is part of the European Commission's strategy to reduce the number of people using such products to less than five percent by 2040.

Flavoured heated tobacco products - just like oil for non-tobacco electronic cigarettes - are sold in several flavours, such as menthol, cherry or grape, which critics say often attracts younger users.

According to the Euractiv portal, heated tobacco has become so popular on the European market that it has met the conditions of the 2014 directive, according to which the European Commission can regulate it in the same respect as classic cigarettes. they do not even have to start the legislative process to revise the original directive, which could take several years.

The new EC proposal must be discussed by the governments of all 27 states of the Union, as well as the European Parliament, before it can be approved.
