The United States Supreme Court overturned the ruling of Roe v. Wade from 1973. This granted women the right to abort until the 23rd week, The New York Times reports. The rules for abortion will be decided by individual states. It is estimated that about half of the states will abolish the right to abortion altogether. Several states have stated in the past that the period should be reduced to six weeks i.e. a time, when a woman may not even know she is pregnant.
The suspicion that the Supreme Court could annul the right to abortion was revealed by the Politico server in mid-May. At the time, it looked like women may lose the federal right to terminate their pregnancies. Judge Samuel Alito described the verdict of the 1970s as a bad decision. According to him, women's rights need to be returned to the hands of elected representatives of the people in individual states.
According to the New York Times, up to half of the states will tighten their rules significantly. In the past, some states have introduced the right to abortion only until the sixth week of pregnancy. If women undergo abortion, they can be prosecuted for it, in some states abortion is considered murder. Criminal liability may also be borne by doctors or paramedics involved in the procedure.
