The World Health Organization has warned about the possible further spread of monkeypox at upcoming festivals and large events in Europe this summer.
WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said that during the summer, "the potential for further spread in Europe and elsewhere in the world is high." According to him, the risk of the disease may increase during the festival season, which is associated with increased sexual activity of the vacation mobility of young people.
The European Region is at the epicentre of the largest & most widespread monkeypox outbreak ever outside endemic areas.

Hans Kluge also confirmed that, based on the investigation into the smallpox cases found so far, it is clear that the disease first appeared in Europe in mid-April.
He added that the lifting of anti-pandemic measures across Europe helped speed up the disease in recent months.
The WHO points out that although many monkeypox cases have been linked to sexual activity, the virus can affect anyone. Hans Kluge confirmed that large-scale measures, as in the case of the coronavirus, would not be necessary, due to the way in which monkeypox spreads. "But - and this is important - we still don't know if we will be able to completely limit its spread."
