The richest Ukrainian man Rinat Akhmetov has announced on Thursday that he plans to sue Russia for losses of 17 to 20 billion dollars caused by bombing of steelworks Azovstal which he owns in the destroyed city of Mariupol.

 

Akhmetov is the owner of the biggest Ukrainian steelwork group of the Metinvest establishment, to which belongs not only the mentioned Azovstal, but also Illicov's metallurgical works in Mariupol which was also severely damaged by Russians. 


„We will certainly sue Russia and will demand proper compensation for all losses, even for business losses," said Akhmetov in an interview for Ukrainian news portal mrpl.city.

Losses reach 20 billion dollars

The answer to the question of how much money the Metinvest group has lost due to damage of Azovstal and Illicov's metallurgical works: "The compensation for damages... caised by Russian aggression is somewhere between 17 and 20 billion dollars. The final sum will be determined in a lawsuit against Russia."

 

 


The billionaire Akhmetov has experienced his business realm in flames even before this war, during the 8 years of fights on the East of Ukraine when pro-Russian separatists occupied the area. 

 

After the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February, the Metinvest group has announced that they may not fulfil their supply contracts.

 

According to Reuters agency, Akhmetov said that since the beginning of the Russian war, he has been staying in Ukraine. "We believe in our country and in our victory," he added.
