Members of the Commission of the secret service of House of Representatives are asking for a reaction to pro-Russian propaganda spread through accounts in Slovakia, in a letter addressed to Mark Zuckerberg. Based on a press release, the situation became critical in the last few weeks when pro-Russian agents shared misinformation about the war in Ukraine, according to the US government.
They want to delete Russian propaganda
The Commission expressed serious concern due to the presence of harmful misinformation and Russian propaganda on Slovak Facebook. "We appeal to Facebook to immediately ensure that the spread of all pro-Russian misinformation be assessed, proven and tagged," stated the letter. American representatives ask the company Meta to tag hoax and misinformation posts in a way that they cannot be so easily spread, or to fully delete them.
They also mention the April visit of members of congress to Bratislava, during which representatives of Slovak government spoke to members of American congress about the spread of pro-Russian misinformation on social media. According to a press release, the problem concerns an easily-identifiable group of pro-Russian enthusiasts who have also been sharing this propaganda during election period and the coronavirus pandemic. Now the disinformation is focused on "Vladimir Putin's bloody war in Ukraine." Slovak and American governments have repeatedly asked the company Facebook to step in, but it has not happened yet.
According to available information, Facebook only has one fact checker for Slovakia. The Commission of American congress therefore demands explanation from the Meta CEO. The firm has promised to inform the congress about their further action in the next few days.
Slovak Facebook has been marked as "the main arena for Kremlin propaganda" by the representative of the American resort. Although Facebook is aware of the disinformation, fake news continue to be available online, says the letter.
