Last week, the head of Russian army general staff Valerij Gerasimov visited dangerous spots at the front line in the East of Ukraine in an attempt to revive Russian military offensive in the area. The New York Times has reported on this in an appeal to Ukrainian and American representatives.

During this visit, Gerasimov has escaped a near-death attack of the Ukrainian army on a school, whose premises are used as a military base in a Russia-controlled city of Izium.

According to an unnamed Ukrainian representative cited by The New York Times, approximately 200 Russian soldiers were killed in the attack, including at least one general. Gerasimov was already on his way back to Russia at the time.

The Washington institute for war studies informed before that Ukrainian forces probably launched an artillery attack on a Russian commander base in Izium on Saturday the 30th of April shortly after the departure of the head of Russian army general staff. However, another high-rank general lost his life.

US representatives could not confirm the attack and Russian ministry of defence did not respond to the commentary request, says the New York Times. "Our working assumption is that he was there, because he admits to not having resolved all his issues," says one of the US representatives. The Russian offence was slow, extensive chaos and low morale was reported among Russian forces.

According to The New York Times, it seems that Kremlin is focusing their military operations around the city of Izium as a part of the renewal of control over Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
