Many of us suffer from symptoms of poor digestion. And that's not just during the holidays, when there's a tendency to overeat. Fast food, coffee on an empty stomach or the so-called late night Netflix snacks can contribute to the reason why you're not feeling well. In cooperation with Budiš and an expert in the field of gastroenterology, we have prepared a few tips on how you can avoid these problems.

Digestive issues are often caused by wrong food combinations, poor eating habits, excessive food intake, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, but also stress, for example. Gastroenterologist MUDr. Miloš Bubán revealed that an estimated 30 or 40% of patients come to him with digestive issues.

"Very often they complain about the feeling of fullness, heaviness in the stomach, heartburn, bloating, sometimes even cramps, stinging and pressure in the abdomen, an urge to vomit or even vomiting itself," says MUDr. Bubán and advises how to prevent it: “The best prevention is to follow regime and dietary measures. If we still don't manage, we need to reach for a diet, skip certain foods or drink enough fluids to support the digestion."

Careful with these foods

Some foods are better to be removed from the daily menu, since they clearly do not aid healthy digestion. "On an empty stomach, it is best to avoid certain foods that cause us to feel heavy and uncomfortable. These are, for example, fruit juices with high sugar content, fruit juices full of refined sugar and also tomatoes, especially when you suffer from reflux, " warns the doctor. At the same time, he points out that it is important to eat and drink at a reasonable time. Eating late at night or not taking at least three-hour breaks in-between meals can cause  problems. He also points out that digestion issues can be triggered by your morning coffee and tea, citrus fruits or products from yeast or puff pastry that tends to cause bloating.

Healthy digestion strengthens immunity

The feeling of lightness, regular stools or getting rid of digestive problems are not the only results of a healthy diet. An appropriate type of diet helps to maintain and strengthen our immune system, which is extremely important these days. This is because the immune system can be weakened to the point that it can no longer resist viruses and bacteria, due to stress or poor lifestyle. Nevertheless, up to 70% of immunity is found in the intestines, which together with the skin separate the external environment from the internal.

That's why it's extremely important for your digestive tract to work smoothly. It can protect you from all sorts of other diseases, not only those of the digestive tract. You can build a good immunity with a healthy lifestyle, which is the foundation to a proper intestinal microflora and bacterial balance. MUDr. Miloš Bubán says that we should not only appreciate our digestive tract, but also take care of it. "Good digestion is essential for the healthy functioning of our body. Not only the stomach, but also the healthy intestines are the primary weapon against dangerous threats, " the doctor specified.

You can help yourself by drinking the right mineral waters

Just as there are foods that do not help healthy digestion, there are those that will help you feel fresh. According to MUDr. Bubán, these include, for example, fennel, flax seeds, fermented vegetables and salads from leafy greens. In general, various foods containing fiber or digestive enzyme supplements can also help. In addition, you can help yourself by drinking various mineral- and bicarbonate-rich mineral waters. "Drinking mineral water while consuming food also brings relief,"  explains MUDr. Bubán. Not only does it quench thirst, but it also supports the proper functioning of the body.

"It turns out that we can also help ourselves by drinking natural mineral waters more often. For example, Budiš mineral water with the content of bicarbonates and sulphates. In addition to other health benefits, it also has a positive effect on the digestive system. The content of sulphates improves the mobility of the intestines and thus prevents constipation, which is a common disorder of the digestive tract, ” explains the doctor.

The positive effect of the Budiš mineral water on digestion is also confirmed by balneology experts. This mineral water contains bicarbonates that bind free acids in the stomach. Sulphates, in turn, ease the irritable bowel syndrome. Calcium sulphate waters have not only an anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract, but also on urinary tract infections. On top of that, drinking carbon dioxide hydrates the mucous membranes of the digestive tract, stimulates the production of stomach acid and accelerates the absorption of nutrients from food.

Trying to lose weight? Beware of the „guaranteed“ drastic diets

Another factor that definitely does not help the healthy digestion are various special diets that we hop on whenever we want to lose the extra few pounds. So if you are planning to lose weight, be more careful. Experts advise to avoid the popular detox or drastic diets. "Choose moderation and maybe indulge in the so-called cleanse day. Lots of liquids, fruits and vegetables. Under no circumstances should you pointlessly copy the non-physiological procedures that are harmful to the body. ”

Healthy stomach functioning  shouldn't be forgotten even when on the path to achieving one's dream figure. Avoiding certain calorie-rich foods can help with your fitness goal, but also with your digestion. Dr. Bubán advises to focus on the elimination of high-fat foods and very sweet foods, while keeping proper preparation in mind. We should avoid fried, smoked or canned foods and rather prepare food when it's fresh.
